Staff Development/Infection Prevention Nurse

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This nursing position works under the guidance of the Director of Nursing to coordinate, provide staff training and infection prevention duties.  The Staff Development/Infection Prevention Nurse will serve as a team member, and collaborates with all other departments.

REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing             

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of Minnesota.
  • Current C.P.R. certification.
  • Nursing Assistant Instructor training  (preferred, but will provide)
  • Specialized training in Infection Prevention and Control (preferred, but will provide)
  • Experience in geriatric nursing preferred.
  • Possession of good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Eligibility for employment after criminal background study, per guidelines of the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

FUNDEMENTAL JOB DUTIES:

Infection Prevention and Control:

  • Monitor resident and employee infections/absences.
  • Monitor antibiotic use.
  • Administer tuberculin skin tests (mantoux) for all new residents and employees.
  • Review influenza and pneumococcal vaccine status for residents.
  • Organize and administer annual influenza vaccinations and offer vaccinations, as appropriate to new residents.
  • Serve as a resource person for staff and residents when infection concerns arise.
  • Participate on the Quality Assurance Committee.
  • Update the Infection Prevention Manual annually (including the TB risk analysis, and the Medical Waste Management Plan).

Staff Development:

  • Assist with HR orientation of new employees
  • Initiate orientation checklists for all new nursing staff
  • Teach the Nursing Assistant class 3-4 times per year.
  • Provide Annual Training on mandatory topics
  • Arrange for regular in-services for staff on variety of topics to ensure all staff are properly trained in their expected role.
  • Participate in annual staff evaluations.
  • Evaluate staff competencies in skill areas that they are expected to perform.
  • Participate on the Safety Committee.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SECONDARY JOB DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate positive working relationship with coworkers and other departments.
  • Promote positive image of St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center
  • Address resident/staff issues in private.
  • Abide by Nursing Department dress code.  Wear nametag at all times. 
  • Attend in-service activities to improve knowledge and skills and maintain competency.
  • Participate in St. Luke's Lutheran Care Center continuous quality improvement efforts.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Office and all areas of St. Luke’s campus   

PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, squat, reach above shoulder level, crouch, kneel, and push/pull.
  • Ability to carry up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to understand and use good body mechanics.
